How To Play Three Card Brag

April 10th, 2012 Games

Although three card brag is an ancestor of poker, it's still played to this day. It's a relatively simple gambling card game that requires hands of three cards. If your poker night has grown a little stale with the same hands of Texas Hold 'Em or five-card stud over and over again, the occasional round of three card brag could be enough variety to keep things interesting again. It's a quick and easy game to learn, and once you do you'll have a whole new game in your card repertoire. Here's a quick explanation on how to play.

First, everyone antes up. Each player is then dealt three cards face down. A single round of betting follows, starting to the left of the dealer. The main difference in betting is that you have to match the same amount that a player before you bets, rather than simply calling up. So if you put in 20 dollars' worth of chips and the player after bets 40, you have to put in 40 on the next round.

Betting continues until there are only two players left. At any point after this, a player can end the betting round by paying double the previous bet, also known as "seeing." When this happens, the two hands are revealed. If there is a tie, the player who paid to "see" loses.

The order of winning hands is three-of-a-kind, straight flush, straight, flush, pair and high card. Note that the best three-of-a-kind in three card brag is made up of up 3s, followed by the usual order. Typically, pairs can win a number of hands because no cards are exchanged, though you'll always have to be careful about a surprise.
