How to Save Money at the Salon

January 3rd, 2013 Personal Finance

Hair cuts, color treatments and other salon services can be pricey, and if you have to go back every few weeks, the cost can really add up. Here's a few easy ways to save on your 'do.

1. Some salons have discounts for off-peak times. Since they're looking to fill up the less desirable times, there's a good chance you can save on a Tuesday rather than a Saturday.

2. Try out a beauty school, which often offers free cuts, colors and styling by students. Chances are they'll do a great job because their instructors will be around to help, so you don't have to worry too much about a botched cut.

3. If you have bangs, ask your stylist if they offer free trims or "dustings" in between cuts. Many do.

4. Color your hair at home if you're going only a shade or two in either direction. Foam formulas are easy to apply and practically fool-proof.

5. If you choose a semi-permanent color rather than a permanent one, it will fade more gradually and you'll have to get it redone less often.

6. Get highlights instead of overall color, which cost less and are easier to maintain.

7. Use color protecting shampoo and products to prevent your hair from fading so you can go longer in between treatments.

8. Check your salon's website for any promotions or deals. Many offer discounts on special services or if they're training someone.

9. Apply a top coat on your nails every couple of days to help your professional manicure or pedicure last longer.

10. Some massages and other spa treatments are cheaper if you buy them in a package, so research your options.
